I use a whip stitch and the other is a ladder stitch. For me the ladder stitch is uncomfortable so I don't use it. For me the trick for relatively invisible stitches is to use a light-weight thread (I like Gutermann which is 50wt) and select a colour that matches the fabric. When making the stitches my goal is to catch a few threads on each hexagon.
