The last three Grannies and the next steps

I have stitched together the last three blocks for my Godstone Grannies (GG) coverlet. This is so exciting because it means the quilt top isn't far off. I've got a plan for stitching it together and I will share that with you but first the last three blocks!

I have a plan to stitch together each of the blocks. The first step is to stitch the path to each block. I have broken down the path so that I can stitch 17 hexagons together to make a triangle. It gets stitched to the top edge of each block. In this picture you can see the path of 17 hexagons stitched to the block.

The side filler half diamonds will need 9 path hexagons. This is a half diamond for the right side of the quilt with the path stitched to it.

From there the blocks get stitched into sections and the sections will be stitched together. I like to draw a diagram of how my quilt top will be stitched together. For me the easiest thing to do is to break it down into manageable sections. This is my plan for stitching the GG coverlet. I will stitch my diamond blocks into five sections. Each of the blocks is numbered (I pin a little tag with the number to my block). In the diagram below you can see the numbers in each diamond so I can sort my diamonds for stitching together. For example, I will need blocks 7, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21 and 25 to make the large center diamond.

I'll stitch the nine diamond blocks together to make the large diamond for the center. The next step will be the upper right corner and the lower left. Finally I'll stitch the blocks for the upper left and lower right corners. I had previously shown you the beginning of the upper left being stitched together. There is one more row of diamonds to be stitched together. Once that is done I can sew the rows together and the upper left corner will be complete.

I plan on stitching a narrow border to the quilt top once the piecing is complete. When I reach that point I will share with you how I do it!

Be sure to check out Sarah's Help for Hexieaholics where there's always plenty of inspiration and links to other bloggers who love hexagons!

I've been doing some piecing on my Juki TL2010Q and tomorrow I'll write about my findings. Until then, happy sewing!
