Introducing Yellow Bird's Sister

Do you remember the quilt Yellow Bird that was made by my friend Babs? It got its name from the fabric that was used. It was a black, white and yellow border print by Vera Bradley and it was called "Yellow Bird". I showed her my method for fussy cutting from a strip of fabric and she used it to make all of the hexagon rosettes.

There were leftover 1" hexagons from Yellow Bird and she wanted to use so she decided to make another quilt quilt that would be a sister quilt to Yellow Bird!

She also had one star that I taught her to make. The Yellow Bird leftovers and this star were the starting point for the new quilt, Yellow Bird's Sister.

Slowly it started coming together.

Here yhou can see she has made a large hexagon and added a black border.

A border of triangles followed. There were still a few more black hexagons to be added to the corners.

After she got this it to this point she had used most of her grey, black and yellow hexagons and decided that she didn't want to go any further. She wanted to take it to a rectangle shape and be finished with it. The decision was to add so strips to four sides and then add triangle units. She had a lovely grey fabric with a hexagon print so that is what was used. It looks really nice but is a little short on the WOW factor.

She removed the corners and replaced them with a darker print and the whole quilt just pops!

This is going to be yet another fabulous quilt by Babs! I think she will hand quilt this one and then bind it with black. I hope you enjoyed seeing this quilt top!

Yellow Bird's Sister, Viewer's Choice and Voting is now Open

Some of you commented on hexagons that you saw in a picture I posted of my friend Bab's bowls.

I gave you a sneak peek of the quilt that she is working on and it is called Yellow Bird's Sister.

Today I have another picture of Yellow Bird's Sister.  Bab's is designing her quilt as she goes. What doesn't show well is the black border around the entire quilt. The fabric had small white flowers on it but they were distracting so Bab's used a Sakura pen to colour them it. They look grey so the effect is very subtle but very nice! I'll take more pictures as it grows!

Yesterday I went on a bus trip to two quilt shops. A girl always needs more fabric (well this girl does)! I had some ideas as to what I wanted/needed but didn't find it. Nonetheless I did manage to find a couple of pieces of fabric that will fit into my stash quite nicely. While we were on the bus I did manage to stitch together one more Lozagons hexagon block! I REALLY like this one!

What are those hexagons for?

Eagle-eyes Sarah wrote to me in response to the picture I posted of Babs' fabric coil baskets and she asked about the tray of hexagons and wanted to know what they are for!

The hexagons belong to Babs and they are leftovers from her Yellow Bird quilt (below).

Babs is a great proponent of using what you have and if you have leftovers use them in a new project. so the leftover hexagons are going to be used for a new quilt and it already has a name.....Yellow Bird's Sister!

She pulled out all of her Yellow Bird leftovers and started making hexagons rosettes. She made a rosette using my foundation paper pieced English paper piecing technique and since it included yellow it was the starting point for her new quilt.

Here's a sneak peak of the centre of her new quilt! This one will also be yellow, grey and black. I think it is going to be a stunner!
