Still busy but trying to sew

I'm still crazy busy trying to work on a variety of projects including the sew along for 2016. Last Friday my Mom fell and broke her right elbow. She is in a cast for six weeks (at least) and there will be no sewing for the time being although knowing her she is trying to figure out how she can create something without moving her elbow.

She did manage to finish the hand applique work on her latest small African quilt just before the injury so I thought I would share it with you. She loves to create vignettes that depict the lives of women (usually grandmothers) and children. This time she also incorporated her love of quilt making and embroidery. I'll machine quilt it for her and when her arm is completely healed she will add her magical touch to really bring this quilt to life!

For my part I've managed to stitch the fourth row of my Road 66 hexagon quilt which is based on the design in Di Ford's book, Primarily Quilts. There's only one more row to assemble and then I can sew the rows together. I think that won't be in the near future what with helping my Mom every day, Christmas and other commitments.

I have been reading all of the lovely comments and will reply to each one as time permits.

Until I post again, happy sewing!
Karen H

  1. Sorry to hear about your mom's arm. I am in Poland visiting my aunt for her 90th birthday and I see her frustration as she tries to function with a cast. She broke her writes last week. Your Route 66 is coming along nicely.

  3. So sorry to hear about your mom's injury. Tell her I am in complete sympathy and know how frustrating it is what with my dealing with a broken hip. I have just been able to get behind a sewing machine and do a bit of quilting, but oh, she has an elbow to contend with - a whole different situation, too. Her block is so darling, and your fourth row is so neat. Merry Christmas to you both!

  9. Karen. Please tell your Mom that I hope she has a speedy and complete recovery and is back to stitching as soon as possible. Her work is beautiful as is yours. Take good care of yourself, too, and do a bit of stitching now and then. Your Road 66 is wonderful.

  12. Oh bless her, am so sorry to hear Mums in a cast!
She may have to cut back on the roller skating for a while then, as well as the stitching?
Just think how much 'picture' planning Mum can come up with in 6 weeks enforced rest, this could be a good time for her to plan ahead : )
LOL and I guess she gets out of Christmas day washing up too - good for her!
Love, love, love the stitching scene she has done!
Its the most charming of hers Ive seen so far -

  14. I do hope your Mum heals quickly, rationed or no sewing for 6 weeks sounds dreadful. Her little African scene is delightful as is your sewing.

  17. I am so sorry to hear about your mom's fall. I will keep her in my prayers for a speedy and complete recovery. I will keep you in my prayers as well, b/c I know what it takes to be a care giver, (as much as you love to do it). Love her wonderful little scene. It speaks volumes. Your Road 66 is coming along nicely as well. I can't wait to see what you have got up your sleeve for the new year, but at the same time, don't wear yourself out. We can all wait a little longer in between postings. Take care of yourself too. All the best to both of you.

  22. African quilts, a new subject to interest me. 'Will have to make one myself. The hexagons quilt is looking so good. I am new to quilting (just over a year), so have not attempted hex's yet. You and your mother do beautiful work.
