Stars and my dilemma

The border of Gardens of a King quilt calls for 16 periwinkle stars. I've been making them from the leftover bits of butterscotch and caramel fabrics and they are lovely and warm looking. They will be terrific on the green background and will connect the applique blocks that are framed in the same fabric.

They are very pretty but I thought I could make them even more so with the addition of one small detail. I cut circles from a fabric that I've already used in the quilt and placed them in the centre of the star. Voila! Pretty, pretty, pretty!

I've made all sixteen stars and then I made 16 circles. I pinned the circles to the stars so that they would be ready to applique to the border. But when I was photographing them I thought something didn't look right. I counted and there are 14. I know there were 16 because I made 16 stars. At a separate time I cut 16 circles and prepped them. I then pinned each of the 16 circles to each of the 16 stars. Now there are 14. Where the heck are the other two? I've searched high and low to no avail. ARGHHH!

I have a little sewing buddy Jinx who is constantly stealing my pens, pencils, freezer paper, brushes and anything that is on my work desk that he can pick up and run away with. When he isn't thieving he is sleeping on my work surface.  I had the stars on my desk and I suspect that my little sewing buddy is the culprit! I'm going to have to search in his hidey-holes to see if he has stashed them away. Good think he is cute or I would be clipping his tail feathers!

So here's my dilemma. Will I make two more stars? If I do I just know that the two missing stars will turn up. The alternative is to wait and see if they turn up on their own. I think I'll wait a bit!

Hope you find the time to take a few stitches today! Until I post again, happy sewing.

  1. LOL! I hope Jinx didn't eat them. I would just go ahead and make two more. Even if you found them, who knows what kind of condition they'd be in!

In any case, it's looking really great!

  2. hehe, if you are anything like me you will hold off making more, sew the 14 on and still not have found the missing 2. Then immediately after cutting and prepping 2 more, they will turn up!!! The extras would then be great as part of the label! Happy stitching :-)

  3. Isn't it amazing how things can just disapear like that! I'm with Raewyn, they'll only turn up when you've made the next two. At least it's only 2 and not more.

  6. Jinx is a cutie!! Sounds like she is a bit of stinker, too. I am just finishing up a quilt that I lost one of the blocks and after 2 years of searching I made a new block -- the original one hasn't turned up yet, so I'm thinking "make two more".

  9. Experience tells me you will find them after you make new ones. If you do, you can use the extras for your label. Good luck finding them. I am sure it will show up soon. Your kitty is beautiful, and so are your stars.

  10. Haha--I hope they turn up! I once had an applique piece completely disappear only to fall out of the space between the sole plate and the rest of my steam iron a year later. I've also found one one the back of the fleece sweater I was wearing-- not sure how that happened, and on the bottom of my fuzzy sock slippers. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that your quilting buddy didn't eat them!

  14. Funny little Jinx! Ginger leaves my stuff alone...all but thimbles and spools of thread! If I leave them on the table by my chair, she finds them and hides them. At least I know her secret spots! Haha! The stars are looking great! Can't wait to see them on the Gardens Of A King Quilt!

  15. Funny! I have an orange and white cat who does the same thing. He doesn't stash them, though, just runs off with them and leaves them about. My old orange cat used to stash things, though. He was a stinker.

  16. I see that my iPhone ate the comment I tried to leave last week. I was trying to say that I would wait to see if the stars showed up. Did you ever find them?
